About
Space BD provides commercial access to JAXA’s ISS Japanese Experiment Module (JEM/Kibo) for research and commercial experiments requiring the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. As JAXA’s designated commercial operator for Kibo, Space BD can arrange experiment rack space, sample storage, crew time for experiment operations, and downlink of data and samples.
Applications include protein crystallization for pharmaceutical development (the microgravity environment produces larger, higher-quality crystals), cell culture and biological research, materials science experiments (combustion, fluid physics), and technology demonstration. Space BD has facilitated experiments for universities, research institutes, and commercial pharmaceutical companies in Japan and internationally.
The service covers experiment design support, hardware development assistance, safety certification, launch manifesting, on-orbit operations coordination, and sample return via SpaceX Dragon or similar reentry vehicle.
