Carbon Fiber Composites for Space Structures

Toray Industries is the world’s largest carbon fiber manufacturer and a key materials supplier to the global space industry. Toray’s carbon fiber (T- and M-series grades) and prepreg composite laminates are used extensively in spacecraft primary structures, rocket body shells and motor cases, payload fairings, and solar array substrates — wherever lightweight, high-stiffness structures are required in space.

Toray’s T700SC and T800 carbon fibers are the standard aerospace composite fibers used by Boeing, Airbus, and spacecraft manufacturers worldwide. For space-specific applications, Toray’s high-modulus M-grade fibers (M46J, M55J, M60J) provide stiffness of 450–600 GPa — several times stiffer than steel at a fraction of the weight — used in spacecraft where dimensional stability (preventing thermal expansion distortion of optical benches or antenna dishes) is critical.

In launch vehicles, Toray fibers and prepregs are used in fairing structures (Ariane 6 fairings use Toray material), rocket motor cases (solid boosters), and interstage structures. For satellites, CFRP honeycomb panels made with Toray fiber are the standard structural material for satellite equipment bays. Toray’s Space Materials Division is based in Tokyo, Japan.
