About Airbus OneWeb Satellites

Airbus OneWeb Satellites (AOS) is a 50/50 joint venture formed in 2016 between Airbus Defence and Space and OneWeb to design and mass-produce small satellites for OneWeb's low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband constellation, as well as for other Airbus customers. The venture combined Airbus' decades of spacecraft engineering heritage with a mandate to fundamentally rethink satellite production: rather than building a handful of large, custom geostationary platforms per year, AOS set out to manufacture hundreds of standardized small satellites on an assembly-line basis, at a cost and cadence never before achieved in the space industry.

To deliver on this goal, AOS built a dedicated high-volume satellite factory in Merritt Island, Florida, near Kennedy Space Center, which began production in mid-2019. Applying automotive-style lean manufacturing principles, pulse-line assembly, and extensive automation and testing standardization, the facility ramped up quickly and reached its target production rate of two satellites per day by January 2020 — an unprecedented throughput for spacecraft manufacturing. A second production line in Toulouse, France also contributed to constellation output, giving the joint venture manufacturing capacity on two continents.

The AOS-built OneWeb satellites are approximately 150 kg-class spacecraft designed for mass production, featuring Ku-band user links and Ka-band gateway links, along with deorbit propulsion and magnetic grappling fixtures to support end-of-life disposal and active debris removal compatibility. These standardized buses were deployed across 12 orbital planes at roughly 1,200 km altitude to form OneWeb's first-generation constellation of 600+ operational satellites plus in-orbit spares, delivering global broadband connectivity including polar and maritime coverage.

By completing the full OneWeb constellation buildout, Airbus OneWeb Satellites became one of the first companies in the world to industrialize LEO satellite manufacturing at true production-line scale, establishing a manufacturing model and factory infrastructure that continues to serve as a benchmark for high-rate smallsat and mega-constellation production, and that Airbus has since leveraged for other constellation and commercial satellite manufacturing programs.
