Albedo

Albedo was founded in 2020 to develop a new class of Earth observation satellites operating in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), below 300 km altitude. At this unprecedented orbit, the proximity to Earth's surface enables imagery at 10 cm per pixel in visible and thermal infrared bands — the highest resolution commercially available — using satellites orders of magnitude smaller and less expensive than traditional high-resolution platforms operating at 400–600 km.

The company's Clarity satellite platform is purpose-built for the harsh VLEO environment, incorporating atomic oxygen-resistant materials, validated 5-year average lifespan, low-drag designs enabling sustained autonomous station-keeping, and CMG-based attitude control for low-jitter precision pointing. Albedo operates below the radiation belts, providing enhanced resilience against space weather and a self-cleaning debris environment from atmospheric drag effects. The VLEO architecture also delivers advantages for active sensing missions: radar, lidar, and RF sensing systems all benefit from proximity-driven signal improvement, with theoretical R⁴ performance gains for coherent active sensors compared to higher orbits.

Albedo targets defense and intelligence customers — having secured contracts with the NRO and Space Force — as well as commercial applications in high-resolution EO, direct-to-device connectivity, and space domain awareness. The company's proliferated constellation model provides resilient reconstitution capability against attack or failure, a key consideration for national security applications where guaranteed access is critical.
