Versatile deployable boom technology for CubeSats supporting payload deployment, stereoscopic imaging, and auto-retraction on anomaly.
Description
Frond's Boom Systems product line provides versatile deployable boom technology for a range of small satellite applications. Built around rollable composite booms from Frond's partner RolaTube Technology Limited, the standard Boom Systems can extend payloads up to 2 m from the host spacecraft, enabling sensor separation, gravity gradient stabilisation, or instrumented tip-mass experiments.
The initial configuration is designed in a CubeSat-compatible form factor and includes an innovative stereoscopic imaging capability: on-orbit imagery is captured of the host spacecraft from the deployed boom tip, providing valuable situational awareness and inspection data. An auto-retraction safety feature allows the boom to stow automatically in the event of a spacecraft anomaly, protecting the host from potential collision or entanglement.
Frond's boom technology is modular and adaptable to different payload masses and deployment lengths, making it suitable for optical payloads, magnetometers, plasma instruments, and drag-sail tip masses. The system draws on Frond's heritage of flight-ready engineering and partnership with proven composite component suppliers.
