Description
The NPS CubeSat Launcher (NPSCuL) is a five-sided deployment structure developed by the Naval Postgraduate School's Space Systems Academic Group in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office to solve the persistent challenge of affordable, reliable access to space for university and government CubeSat missions. Rather than a single satellite, NPSCuL is a launch infrastructure system: it attaches to the aft bulkhead carrier of an Atlas V (or similar) launch vehicle as a secondary/auxiliary payload and carries multiple standardized P-POD (Poly-Picosatellite Orbital Deployer) canisters, each capable of releasing several 1U-equivalent CubeSats into low Earth orbit.
In its full configuration, NPSCuL can accommodate up to 24 CubeSats in a single launch, dramatically lowering the per-satellite cost and schedule risk for university, military, and government smallsat programs. It has flown successfully as the CubeSat deployment mechanism for two major auxiliary payload missions on the Atlas V: OUTSat (Operationally Unique Technologies Satellite) and GEMSat (Government Experimental Multi-satellite), together delivering dozens of CubeSats developed by NPS, other universities, and defense research organizations into orbit. A companion variant, NPSCuL-Lite, carries eight P-POD canisters and is used to support NPS officer-student thesis research and hands-on laboratory integration and testing experience.
Beyond the launcher hardware itself, the NPSCuL program provides critical educational infrastructure for NPS's Space Systems Engineering and Space Systems Operations curricula, letting military officer-students participate directly in real satellite integration, vibration testing, and launch campaign activities as part of their graduate research.
