About Naval Postgraduate School

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, is a graduate research university serving U.S. and allied military officers, and its Space Systems Academic Group (SSAG) is one of the most active small-satellite programs in the Department of Defense. Officer-students in the Space Systems Engineering and Space Systems Operations programs design, build, and fly CubeSats as part of their thesis research, giving military engineers direct hands-on spacecraft experience before returning to operational assignments.

NPS developed the NPS CubeSat Launcher (NPSCuL), a five-sided deployer structure capable of carrying up to 24 CubeSats to orbit as a secondary payload on Atlas V and other launch vehicles. Built in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office, NPSCuL has flown as the primary CubeSat deployment mechanism for missions including OUTSat (Operationally Unique Technologies Satellite) and GEMSat (Government Experimental Multi-satellite), delivering dozens of university and government CubeSats to orbit across multiple launches.

Beyond the launcher itself, NPS students have designed and flown numerous CubeSats such as NPS-SCAT and Solar Cell Array Tester payloads, focused on space situational awareness, communications, and technology demonstration relevant to naval and national security space missions.
