About Nigcomsat

Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) was established on April 4, 2006 as a government-owned company under the supervision of Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. The company was created to manage Nigeria's satellite communications program, following the launch of NigComSat-1 in 2007, Africa's first geostationary communications satellite, built and launched in partnership with the China Great Wall Industry Corporation.

After NigComSat-1 failed in orbit in 2008 due to a solar array anomaly, it was replaced by NigComSat-1R, launched on December 11, 2011 from Xichang, China aboard a Long March-3B rocket. Positioned at 42.5°E, NigComSat-1R operates with radiation-hardened, fault-tolerant technology across C-band, Ku-band, Ka-band and L-band frequencies, delivering coverage over West, Central, East and Southern Africa as well as parts of Europe and Asia.

Today NIGCOMSAT operates as a full-service satellite operator, offering broadcasting infrastructure for DTH and IPTV operators, transponder capacity leasing across 28 transponders and 7 antenna beams, broadband connectivity for government, enterprise, oil and gas, and mobile backhaul customers, and satellite-based navigation augmentation through the Nigerian Satellite Augmentation System (NSAS). The company also delivers value-added government services such as e-voting, agricultural asset tracking (SAACS) and e-toll systems, in support of its mission to "connect the unconnected via satellite in Africa."
