About SSTL (Surrey Satellite Technology)

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) designs, builds, tests, and operates small satellites. The company was formed in 1985 as a spin-out from the University of Surrey, transferring research into a commercial enterprise. SSTL has built and launched approximately 70 satellites for 22 countries over three decades. The company pioneered the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components for satellites, demonstrating that relatively small and inexpensive "micro" satellites could be built rapidly for sophisticated missions. SSTL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Airbus since 2009, when Airbus acquired the majority shareholding from the University of Surrey. The company has received several awards, including the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement in 1998, the SSPI Industry Innovators Award in 2000, and an ESA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Galileo programme in 2008. SSTL also supports the Armed Forces Community.
