The FFT2G (Fast Fourier Transform 2nd Generation) spectrometer is a customisable spectrum analysing device designed and built by AAC Omnisys for ground-based applications, specifically radio astronomy. It is robust and reliable, with a configurable signal processing Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) as a core feature. The FPGA controls a dual multi-core high-speed analogue-to-digital converter and computes the FFT power spectrums, allowing an indefinite variety of options and features to be added. Each module processes up to eight input signals with a bandwidth of 125 MHz across 8192 spectral channels, and offers an impressive 5000 MHz instantaneous bandwidth sampled by high-speed ADCs and processed by a real-time pipelined and parallel FFT-core. The spectrometer provides 32-bit fine power amplitude resolution for all frequency channels, accumulated during the FFT integration time. It can be used as a stand-alone backend measurement device in a laboratory environment, or built into a larger system with multiple modules to further increase bandwidth and resolution, coping with multi-pixel frontend designs. Key features include up to 8 input channels, input bandwidth up to 5000 MHz, FFT frequency resolution up to 32k channels, a single 12 V supply voltage, and power consumption under 40 W. Several off-the-shelf firmware configurations are available, offering different combinations of input count, bandwidth, and channel resolution, including IQ and Real modes.
