About

Aphelion Orbitals is an in-space servicing startup developing autonomous servicing vehicles capable of rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) with customer satellites — providing life extension refueling, inspection, debris removal, and repositioning services in low Earth orbit and geostationary orbit.

The company addresses a growing commercial and government need: thousands of defunct satellites and rocket bodies occupy valuable orbital slots or contribute to debris cascading risk (Kessler syndrome). Both ESA and NASA have identified active debris removal (ADR) as critical for long-term space sustainability. Commercial GEO satellite operators also have strong demand for refueling and life-extension services — extending a GEO satellite’s operational life by 5–7 years with a fuel resupply mission can be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Aphelion Orbitals’ approach uses autonomous RPO navigation, a docking mechanism compatible with standard satellite interfaces, and a modular service vehicle architecture that can carry refueling, inspection camera, or mechanical interface payloads. The company is working toward demonstration missions in the late 2020s. In-space servicing represents one of the key emerging sectors in the space economy, with Northrop Grumman Mission Extension Vehicles (MEV) already providing commercial GEO life extension.
