About

AstroForge’s core differentiating technology is an in-space refinery — the industrial processing equipment needed to extract platinum group metals (PGMs) from asteroid ore and refine them into usable material in the microgravity, vacuum environment of space. The company’s thesis is that returning raw asteroid rock to Earth would be prohibitively expensive and unnecessary; instead, refining to metal ingots in space (dramatically reducing mass) before Earth return makes the economics viable.

AstroForge’s refinery process is adapted from terrestrial pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical techniques, modified for space constraints: no gravity, no atmosphere, extreme temperature cycling, and limited power. The company’s engineers have developed compact furnace and separation technology that can process chondritic or M-type asteroid material to separate iron, nickel, and platinum group metals in a satellite-scale form factor.

AstroForge has demonstrated its refinery technology on the ground and flew a technology demonstration payload on its Odin spacecraft (launched January 2024). The company’s business model is to mine asteroids containing 100+ parts per million PGMs (versus <1 ppm in Earth's crust), process the ore in space, and return refined metal to Earth via reentry capsules — potentially disrupting the global supply chains for platinum, palladium, and iridium used in catalytic converters, electronics, and medical devices.
