About
The BE-7 is Blue Origin’s liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen rocket engine designed specifically for precision lunar landing applications. It operates on a dual expander cycle, generating 44,000 N (10,000 lbf) of vacuum thrust with a specific impulse of 460 seconds — the highest Isp of any of Blue Origin’s engines. A throttle range of 20–100% enables the fine thrust control required for powered descent and soft touchdown on the lunar surface.
BE-7 serves as both the descent and ascent engine for the Blue Moon family of lunar landers: the Mark 1 robotic cargo lander uses a single BE-7, while the crewed Mark 2 variant uses three engines for redundancy. In June 2026, Blue Origin completed a record-breaking static fire test of approximately 2,500 seconds of continuous operation — the longest continuous rocket engine burn in history, surpassing the Space Shuttle Main Engine’s prior record.
The engine uses additive manufacturing to reduce part count and production cost. Its LH2/LOX propellants could eventually be produced from lunar ice deposits through in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), enabling sustainable long-duration lunar missions. Test campaigns have been conducted at Marshall Space Flight Center and Edwards Air Force Base vacuum test facilities.
