The BHT-100 is a highly efficient Hall thruster in a compact package, building on Busek’s experience with smaller thrusters like the BHT-200. It features state-of-the-art magnetic shielding that focuses ions away from the channel walls, leading to a predicted lifetime of 10,000 hours or more. This thruster represents a significant advancement over the BHT-200 in terms of lifetime, power, and size. With an efficient operating range of 75 to 125 W, the BHT-100 is well-suited for the power operating envelopes of small spacecraft. It is compatible with both Xenon and Iodine propellants. Iodine offers advantages in storage density, storing in the solid phase at 4.9-kg/l compared to xenon’s 1.66-kg/l as a super-critical fluid. Testing indicates that thruster efficiency with iodine fuel is nearly identical to that with xenon. Busek also offers the option of a complete and fully integrated Hall Effect thruster system with the BHT-100, which includes a cathode, power processing unit, digital control unit, and propellant management systems. These propulsion systems combine commercially sourced parts with long flight heritage and in-house produced assemblies and electronics, optimized for maximum performance and lifetime.
