About
The BGT-X5 is a monopropellant thruster system for high performance space applications, producing 0.5N (500 mN nominal) thrust using a highly stable ‘green’ propellant (ASCENT) as an alternative to hydrazine. The thruster features a patented long-life catalyst reactor, a high temperature thruster body, and a low-power piezo microvalve with flight heritage. The system includes a novel propellant tank and a patent-pending Post-Launch Pressurization System (PLPS) that together enable a compact, high-thrust propulsion solution for CubeSats and Smallsats within a 1U volume. The system easily scales by increasing the propellant tank size to support higher total impulse applications, and multiple systems can be integrated onto a single spacecraft for modular attitude control and translational thrust. The ASCENT propellant offers 10% higher specific impulse and 45% greater density than hydrazine, which is highly toxic. Replacing hydrazine with ASCENT results in a smaller, lighter propellant tank and lower wet mass for a given mission. The stable propellant also reduces transportation costs and ground handling time, and allows for simplified storage due to its lower vapor pressure.
