About
NANOSAT-1B is a 19 kg nanosatellite developed by INTA (Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial) as Spain’s second nanosatellite. Launched on 2 July 2009 from Baikonur aboard a Rokot/Briz-KM launch vehicle into a sun-synchronous orbit at approximately 660 km altitude.
The satellite carries an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver for maritime ship tracking, demonstrating Spain’s capability in small satellite development for operational applications. It also carries a digital camera for Earth observation.
NANOSAT-1B was the successor to NANOSAT-01, continuing INTA’s nanosat program to develop small satellite expertise and test technologies for future missions. The satellite demonstrated the utility of small platforms for maritime surveillance applications.
