K2 Space is a US commercial satellite company developing a next-generation geostationary (GEO) satellite bus designed for very high payload power capacity at dramatically reduced cost compared to traditional GEO satellite manufacturers. The company’s name references the K2 mountain — the second highest peak on Earth — suggesting ambition and reaching new heights in satellite capability.

K2 Space’s satellite bus uses all-electric propulsion (krypton or xenon Hall thrusters) for orbit raising and station-keeping, eliminating heavy chemical propellant tanks that dominate the mass budget of conventional GEO platforms. While all-electric orbit raising takes longer (6–9 months vs. weeks with chemical apogee kick), the propellant mass savings allow much larger solar arrays and payload power — targeting 15–50 kW of payload power versus the 6–10 kW of typical current GEO platforms.
