KOMPSAT-3A IR Sensor Payload

Hanwha Systems
KOMPSAT-3A IR Sensor Payload

Korea's first indigenous infrared satellite sensor payload, providing sub-meter optical and day/night IR imaging from orbit.

About

The KOMPSAT-3A IR Sensor Payload was developed by Hanwha Systems as Korea’s first domestically developed infrared sensor for a multi-purpose satellite. Integrated on KOMPSAT-3A, the payload combines a sub-meter resolution electro-optical camera with an infrared sensor enabling day and night imaging. The system achieved world-class performance standards and is currently operational with an extended mission lifetime.

Hanwha Systems holds the distinction of being the only Korean company capable of developing both EO/IR and SAR payloads for satellite systems. The KOMPSAT-3A IR payload was the first stepping stone in this capability, demonstrating indigenous space-grade IR sensor development that had previously been exclusively supplied by foreign contractors. Technology and experience from KOMPSAT-3A IR directly informed development of follow-on payloads for KOMPSAT-7 and KOMPSAT-7A.
