MX-9 Frontier Class Explorer
A nine-engine heavy lunar lander designed for larger payload delivery and lunar sample-return missions.
About
The MX-9 is Moon Express’s ‘Frontier Class Explorer,’ equipped with nine PECO (RP-1/hydrogen peroxide) engines providing solar-system-class delta-V and capable of delivering up to roughly 500 kg to the lunar surface. It is optimized for sample-return missions and includes dedicated ascent-vehicle integration to bring lunar material back to Earth.
Historically this corresponded to Moon Express’s planned third expedition, intended to return the first non-government lunar rock and dust samples to Earth, making lunar material available to scientists, collectors, and commercial buyers — the only prior lunar samples on Earth having come from the U.S. Apollo program and Soviet robotic missions.
