About
The MUSIC (MUlti-Stage Ignition Compact Hall Thruster) is a flight-ready, second-generation qualified integrated propulsion solution designed for nanosatellites and microsatellites. This system is fully self-contained in a 4U form factor, including the thruster, cathodes, control electronics, and propellant tank, making it ready for integration. It has a developmental heritage, with an early version launched in 2022 aboard a 3U nanosatellite, marking the first Hall thruster flown on such a small spacecraft. In 2023, MUSIC was integrated and launched as part of a multimodal propulsion engine on a 12U satellite, enabling four-degree-of-freedom attitude and orbital control. A dual MUSIC system was delivered and environmentally qualified in 2024 for a 180 kg microsatellite platform, providing full redundancy for VLEO optical imaging operations. Future developments include a four-unit cluster for an 85 kg microsatellite to high-altitude orbit by mid-2027, targeting a total impulse of approximately 150 kNs, and a second-generation 4U COTS product operational in VLEO aboard a 16U satellite platform by 2028.
