The NCTR-M012 Magnetorquer Rod provides a method for controlling the attitude of a spacecraft. This control can be achieved directly by interacting with the local Earth’s magnetic field. Alternatively, it can be used in combination with reaction wheels, allowing for the dumping of excess momentum from the wheels without requiring a complex propulsion system. The inclusion of a magnetic alloy rod in its design produces an amplification effect compared to air-cored magnetorquers. This design choice results in a system that consumes less power, a critical factor for CubeSat missions where power efficiency is paramount. The magnetorquer rods are engineered to enhance mission maneuverability and reduce detumble rates. They are designed to be powered directly from a switched 5 Volt power output supplied by the on-board power control system.
