OASIS (Optimizing Agriculture in Simulated Interplanetary Soils) is a scientific research payload developed by Jaguar Space in collaboration with Texas A&M AgriLife and Starbase Brewing. The experiment launched to the International Space Station aboard NASA’s Crew-11 mission on July 31, 2025, as part of ISS Expedition 73.

The OASIS investigation examines whether barley (Hordeum vulgare) can grow sustainably in Martian regolith simulant (JSC-Mars-1) under microgravity conditions. Seeds are germinated in sterilized Martian soil enhanced with recycled brewing byproducts, and researchers study how plant-microbe-mineral interactions differ under altered gravity. Analysis employs ultra-high resolution mass spectroscopy (FT-ICR-MS), microbial sequencing, and greenhouse gas measurement, with Earth-based controls providing comparison data.

Key research objectives include evaluating effects on plant nutrition, physiology, morphology, rhizosphere microbial recruitment, organic matter breakdown, and greenhouse gas generation in reduced gravity. The results are directly relevant to long-duration human spaceflight and the eventual colonization of Mars, where sustainable food production from available local soils will be critical.
