About
OHB Italia S.p.A. (formerly Carlo Gavazzi Space and later Officine Galileo Space) is the Italian subsidiary of OHB SE, providing satellite manufacturing, systems engineering, and payload integration services from its facility in Crespellano (Bologna), Italy. OHB Italia’s flagship program is COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation (CSG) — the dual-use civilian and military SAR Earth observation satellite constellation developed for the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Italian Ministry of Defense.
CSG-1 and CSG-2 (launched in 2019 and 2021) are X-band SAR satellites providing sub-meter resolution imagery for Italian defense intelligence, civil protection (disaster response), and commercial Earth observation customers. Each satellite weighs approximately 2,200 kg and features a large deployable SAR antenna providing multiple operating modes from 1 m Spotlight to 100 m ScanSAR.
OHB Italia also provides satellite subsystem manufacturing for ESA programs including Galileo navigation satellites (OHB is prime contractor) and components for ESA science missions. The Crespellano facility is certified for satellite assembly, integration, and test (AIT) operations, and has a clean room rated for full spacecraft integration.
