About
SmartLEO Agile is OHB System AG’s enhanced version of the SmartLEO small-satellite bus, incorporating Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs) to achieve fast slew rates up to 3 degrees per second — enabling wide-area SAR collection during short revisit windows. It inherits the design lineage of the SAR-Lupe reconnaissance satellites and the SmartLEO platform’s modular, three-axis stabilised architecture, scaling the bus up to the 1,900-2,100 kg launch-mass range for larger radar payloads. The SmartLEO Agile was selected as the satellite bus for all three spacecraft in Germany’s SARah constellation (SARah-1, -2 and -3), launched in 2022 by SpaceX Falcon 9. SARah provides Germany with high-resolution synthetic aperture radar imagery for government and defence applications, replacing the SAR-Lupe system. The programme is operated under contract from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).
