About
The ONDOSAT-OWL is ONDO Space’s 0.5U CubeSat platform operating in LEO at approximately 550 km altitude. The satellite weighs approximately 0.9 kg and operates in the VHF/UHF amateur band for telemetry and command. The first unit, ONDOSAT-OWL-1 (also designated BIRDS-5), was developed under JAXA’s BIRDS multinational CubeSat development program in collaboration with Kyushu University and was deployed from the ISS Kibo module via the J-SSOD system in 2022.
The satellite performs earth observation and IoT data relay functions, serving as the foundation for ONDO Space’s commercial service offerings including livestock tracking and ground station connectivity services. The 0.5U form factor allows deployment via the ISS-compatible J-SSOD without requiring a dedicated launch, reducing entry cost for LEO operations.
ONDO Space is developing follow-on ONDOSAT-OWL units to expand coverage and improve service availability for its Mongolian IoT customers.
