About
SPACE WALKER is developing a linerless cryogenic liquid composite tank, engineered to minimize weight beyond conventional composite tanks that use a liner. Originally developed to store cryogenic propellant (liquefied biomethane and liquid oxygen) for SPACE WALKER’s winged reusable rockets, the technology is being extended to terrestrial applications, including single- and double-layer vessels for liquid hydrogen (LH2), LNG and LOX storage and transport. Development roadmap: research and development / proof-of-concept for single- and double-layer LH2/LNG/LOX vessels, followed by commissioned development for land/sea/air/space applications from 2022, installation in SPACE WALKER’s own rocket, sales of single-layer vessels to other companies’ rockets from 2025, and progression toward KHK (High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan) certification for stationary and transportation applications through 2027. The tank is positioned as a key enabler for both space launch vehicles and Japan’s broader hydrogen economy, supporting the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Basic Hydrogen Strategy targets for carbon neutrality by 2050.
