Description
Hokkaido Spaceport (HOSPO) offers a comprehensive aerospace experiment and research support platform open to companies, government agencies, and academic institutions worldwide. The spaceport's diverse facilities — launch complexes, runway, open airspace, and proximity to open sea — make it one of Japan's most versatile aerospace test ranges.
Suborbital rocket experimentation has been conducted at HOSPO since long before SPACE COTAN was founded. CAMUI hybrid rockets by Uematsu Electric Co., Ltd. and MOMO sounding rockets by Interstellar Technologies have established a strong flight heritage. Tokai University's student rocket project (TSRP) has conducted numerous hybrid rocket tests at the site, including Hybrid Rocket No.57 (2023), No.59 (2024), and No.60 (2025). HASTIC and other organizations have also conducted sounding rocket campaigns.
High-altitude balloon experiments have been conducted at HOSPO since 2008, with JAXA and Iwaya Inc. utilizing the site for stratospheric science missions. The open Hokkaido sky and low population density provide ideal conditions for balloon release and tracking.
For aerial mobility, the runway and surrounding airspace support flight testing for UAV/drones (NTT Advanced Technology), eVTOL aircraft (SkyDrive Inc.), and conventional aircraft cold-weather testing (Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, JAXA, Navicom Aviation). The spaceport also hosts aviation events, airshows, and community engagement activities.
Academic users including multiple Japanese universities have access to the full range of HOSPO facilities for aerospace research, with support from the HOSPO operational team on safety, regulatory compliance, and launch coordination.
