FalconSat-3

Busek Co.
FalconSat-3

The FalconSat-3 features the first 3-electrode micro-pulsed plasma thruster (μPPT) in space, launched in 2007.

About

The basic micro-pulsed plasma thruster configuration was created and patented by the AFRL to meet the Air Force’s need for efficient, low-mass propulsive ACS for small spacecraft. Busek Co. Inc. took over the hardware and design for advanced engineering and flight hardware development under the IHPRPT program, a collaborative effort involving the Air Force, NASA, and industry. The resulting three-axis MPACS (Micro-Propulsion Attitude Control System) was built, tested, and delivered for its 2007 launch. Four of these units have successfully flown on the USAFA FalconSat-3 satellite. This micro-pulsed plasma thruster represents a rugged, precision propulsion technology that has undergone continuous development and miniaturization at Busek Co, Inc.
