About
The Kinetic Moment Reset System is a spacecraft attitude control unit designed for calming low-orbit spacecraft and unloading (dumping) the kinetic/angular momentum accumulated in the spacecraft body and in flywheel (reaction wheel) engines. It works by sensing the geomagnetic field and generating a controlled magnetic torque via onboard electromagnets to interact with Earth’s magnetic field, desaturating the momentum stored in the attitude control actuators. Structurally, the product consists of 2 primary converters of the geomagnetic field, designated PGP-3M and PGP-3MD (the latter serving as a duplicate for redundancy), 6 electromagnets (each 1 meter in length) arranged to form three axis rod electromagnets, and an electronic control block. The system is intended for use in low and medium working orbits. It was first released in 2005, has a guaranteed service life of 10 years, and an estimated production/delivery time of 14 months. The product is flight-qualified, having flown as part of the Resurs-DK spacecraft, and it can be adapted to customer requirements.
