About

The Magnetic Field Simulator is a system composed of three pairs of mutually orthogonal square coils, forming a Helmholtz cage. Its primary purpose is to simulate the magnetic field experienced by a satellite during its orbital flight. The system generates a magnetic field by inducing current in the coil wires, with the direction and value of the field controlled by the amperage. A block of pulse-width modulators, connected to a personal computer via USB, controls the currents in the cage. A magnetometer provides feedback to ensure accurate simulation. The product was released in 2009 and has a homogeneity zone diameter of 600 mm, with a maximum field amplitude of 150,000 nT (without the Earth’s magnetic field). It is not flight-qualified and cannot be adapted to customer requirements. The estimated production/delivery time is 5 months.
