About
Magson’s Ocean Bottom Magnetometer is equipped with mass memory and encapsulated in a titanium pressure tube to withstand deep-sea deployment conditions. Numerous units are used worldwide for the exploration of submarine gas hydrate reservoirs and for basic marine geophysics research, notably by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel. The instrument can be extended with inertial measurement units (IMUs) for enhanced positional and orientation data during deployment. A battery-powered variant is also offered that is additionally capable of performing accurate E-field measurements at sample rates of up to 10 kHz, broadening its utility for combined magnetic and electric field surveys on the seafloor. The rugged titanium housing and autonomous, battery-powered operation make this instrument well suited to long-duration unattended deployments in harsh, high-pressure underwater environments.
