About

The Magson Ship-Board Magnetometer is based on the company’s standard dual-sensor magnetometer design and is adapted to pinpoint the geomagnetic vector while mounted on a ship’s hull. For this demanding application, the sensors are accommodated in a seawater-resistant, waterproof, and thermally isolated housing, and can optionally be thermally stabilized by a dedicated heating unit to maintain measurement accuracy despite fluctuating marine environmental conditions. To remove the magnetic influence and motion effects of the vessel itself, Magson applies custom correction algorithms that incorporate data from the ship’s inertial measurement unit (IMU), the sensor-internal inclinometer, and GPS positioning. Magson shipboard magnetometers are successfully deployed on the German research vessels Polarstern and Sonne, supporting long-term oceanographic and geomagnetic survey missions in demanding marine conditions.
