Oregon's first satellite: a 1U CubeSat that provided flight heritage for the OreSat bus.
About
OreSat0 was a 1U CubeSat built by the Portland State Aerospace Society to provide flight heritage for the open-source OreSat satellite system, testing critical subsystems ahead of the main OreSat mission. It carried solar panels, batteries, radios, an onboard computer, GPS, and a star tracker in a 6061 aluminum, Type II black-anodized frame, with 38 Wh of battery storage (two 2S1P packs of 18650 Li-Ion cells), a UHF transceiver (436.5 MHz), and an L-band receiver (1.265/1.575 GHz). OreSat0 launched on an Astra Rocket 3.3 (mission LV009) on March 15, 2022, into a 525 km sun-synchronous low Earth orbit. Described by the team as Oregon’s first satellite, its primary objective was to operate successfully in space and validate the OreSat bus’s core components; by August 2024 its orbit had decayed to roughly 370 km, with atmospheric reentry predicted for 2025.
