About

The piDOSE-DCD/FM (Flight Model) is a Space-Friendly™ Digital CubeSat Dosimeter. It is a smart, miniature, and low-power space-grade radiation sensor designed for space weather applications or radiation measurement satellite constellations. This unit provides information about local gamma ray radiation background aboard small satellites in space, based on ten-second and minute period measurements, without the use of high voltage geiger-tube sensors. It helps monitor radiation to prevent latchup in sensitive commercial (CMOS) electronics used in small satellites. The PIN diode solid-state radiation sensor is equipped with a scintillation crystal to extend the lateral sensitive volume to almost omnidirectional and a wider energy range (~0.2 – 10 MeV). The unit contains electrical outputs to signalize an alarm threshold, an error signal for sensor overload, an interrupt signal for UART data packet transfer, a digital counts per minute pulse output, and an analog counts per minute output. It sends six packets about counts per 10-second period, followed by a summary packet indicating dose rate integrated over the past 60 seconds, along with telemetry information (voltage, temperature, uptime). This 3.3V @ 30mW ultra-low power, low voltage solid-state radiation detector replaces old, bulky, high-voltage Geiger-Müller tubes in a matchbox-sized form factor, providing data over a UART interface in an easy-to-parse ASCII format.
