MoonRanger — 5 kW Hall-Effect Thruster

The MoonRanger (PF-MOONRANGER) is Pulsar Fusion’s 5–7 kW Hall-effect thruster targeting GEO-class missions, cislunar transfer, and high-power constellation applications. At the nominal 5 kW design point the MoonRanger targets greater than 280 mN thrust at approximately 1,800 s specific impulse; at 7 kW, targets exceed 350 mN at approximately 2,050 s Isp on krypton or […]

About

The MoonRanger (PF-MOONRANGER) is Pulsar Fusion’s 5–7 kW Hall-effect thruster targeting GEO-class missions, cislunar transfer, and high-power constellation applications. At the nominal 5 kW design point the MoonRanger targets greater than 280 mN thrust at approximately 1,800 s specific impulse; at 7 kW, targets exceed 350 mN at approximately 2,050 s Isp on krypton or xenon propellant. First firing tests in November 2024 demonstrated 104 mN thrust and 1,891 s Isp at partial 2 kW power (below the design voltage range of 300–500 V). Eight MoonRanger thrusters are baselined as the electric propulsion system for Pulsar’s Sunbird fusion tug when it enters service. The MoonRanger uses magnetic shielding for extended operational lifetime in high-delta-V missions. Pulsar Fusion is based in Bletchley, UK, and also produces the LeoBear 500 W and MarsRanger 10 kW thrusters alongside the Sunbird nuclear fusion development programme.
