The Soyuz-2 (GRAU index: 14A14) is a series of Russian expendable medium-lift launch vehicles developed and produced by the Progress Rocket Space Centre (RKTs Progress) in Samara. It is the seventh major iteration of the Soyuz rocket family, featuring significant upgrades over its predecessors, including improved engines and a digital flight control system. This digital system enables launches from fixed platforms and supports larger payload fairings. The Soyuz-2 is primarily used to place payloads into low Earth orbit but can also support missions to higher orbits with an additional upper stage, such as the Fregat or the smaller Volga. Since its introduction in 2004, Soyuz-2 has gradually replaced earlier Soyuz variants and is launched from various cosmodromes including Baikonur, Plesetsk, and Vostochny.

The Soyuz-2 family includes several variants. The base model, Soyuz-2.1a, debuted in 2004, introducing the digital flight control system, lighter avionics, and upgraded RD-107A and RD-108A engines, while retaining the RD-0110 engine for the third stage but with enlarged propellant tanks. These changes increased payload capacity by about 300 kg. The Soyuz-2.1b, introduced in 2006, further enhanced performance by replacing the third-stage RD-0110 with the more efficient RD-0124 engine, an oxygen-rich staged-combustion engine, which increased specific impulse and significantly boosted payload capability to low Earth orbit (e.g., from 7,430 kg for 2.1a to 8,670 kg for 2.1b from Baikonur). A derivative version, Soyuz-ST, was developed for operations at the Guiana Space Centre.

Modifications for the Vostochny Cosmodrome included the ability to remain fueled on the launch pad for up to 100 hours, structural and piping changes for vertical payload integration and safe propellant venting, an upgraded computer with six times the performance, and new nickel-cadmium batteries. The rocket can be configured with 3 or 4 stages, with optional Fregat/Fregat-M or Volga upper stages. The first crewed mission of Soyuz-2 took place on April 9, 2020, carrying Soyuz MS-16 to the ISS. Recent developments include successful ground testing and launch with naphthyl fuel, which slightly improves engine performance due to fewer aromatic compounds than kerosene.
