Fenix Energy designs, manufactures and markets low-carbon energy production systems (cogeneration plants) based on the combustion of metal particles. The targeted onshore market is off-grid energy production, covering applications such as electrical network balancing and industrial cogeneration. For lunar applications, the system exploits the fact that regolith is an important source of metals and oxygen, making it possible to produce energy from this in-situ resource during the 14 days of lunar night when there is no sunlight. Iron, the preferred fuel choice on Earth, is one of the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust and in lunar regolith. High-temperature oxidation of iron generates heat without CO2 emissions, and produces rust (iron oxide) as a byproduct that is easily recoverable and can be regenerated back into metal fuel using renewable energy sources. A key advantage of using metals as fuel is the ease and safety of their transport and storage, owing to their high energy density. This makes deployment for industrial heat or off-grid electricity production simple and free of major infrastructure costs, since there is no need to extend electricity networks or build pipelines as would be required for hydrogen-based solutions.
