About TechTheMoon

TechTheMoon is the world's first lunar incubator, founded under the auspices of the French space agency CNES through its Connect by CNES programme. Backed by Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, Boston Consulting Group, and IRDI Capital-investissement, TechTheMoon's mission is to foster innovation in response to the challenge of living and working sustainably on the Moon, while simultaneously creating commercial solutions with direct terrestrial applications.

Startups selected by TechTheMoon gain access to CNES technical expertise, co-working and prototyping facilities at the SpaceShip France centre at the Centre Spatial de Toulouse, and a broad network of industrial and research partners. The programme covers the full journey from ideation to market launch, with mentoring from experienced professionals spanning aerospace, medicine, finance, and entrepreneurship.

The incubator focuses on four core thematic areas: energy resources from lunar regolith, autonomous habitat and base camp construction, health risk monitoring for long-duration crews, and reusable lunar transportation vehicles. Each startup is expected to first address a terrestrial market before expanding to lunar applications.

TechTheMoon connects its portfolio companies with the broader European NewSpace ecosystem via the Spaceship France laboratory at the Centre Spatial de Toulouse, supporting cross-pollination between deep-tech startups and established space industry players, with the ultimate ambition of building a new commercial Earth-Moon economy.

Milestones

  • 2021 TechTheMoon launched as the world's first lunar-only incubator, in partnership with CNES Connect by CNES
  • 2022 First cohort of lunar startups selected, spanning energy, habitat, health, and transportation domains
  • 2024 Programme expanded with partner incubators across France in Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes, Bidart, and Valbonne
