About

The RIXSCam is a multi-EMCCD detector system engineered for single-photon detection in soft X-ray spectroscopy. Originally developed in collaboration with scientists at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), it is specifically designed for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) experiments and synchrotron radiation research in the 250–3000 eV energy range.

The system achieves exceptional spatial resolution through a combination of back-illuminated EMCCD sensors, advanced centroiding technology, and proprietary algorithms, delivering post-processed resolution below 5 um. A rotatable detector bench accommodates up to three detectors, allowing operators to adjust the detector incidence angle between 20 degrees and 90 degrees and optimise effective pixel dimensions for specific beamline requirements.

The RIXSCam operates at up to 3x faster throughput than previous-generation systems while maintaining system noise below 1 e- RMS (with EM gain), and delivers approximately 30% energy resolution improvement compared to earlier CCD camera installations at PSI. The system is fully vacuum-compatible to 10e-9 mbar and includes Peltier-based cryogenic cooling to -110 deg C.
