About

The Flying Lunar Lander is an advanced lunar surface mobility vehicle developed by Yuzhnoye SDO that can conduct research at up to three separate sites on the lunar surface, with sites spaced approximately 20 km apart. It delivers 50 kg payload capacity per individual site visit, with up to 150 kg single-site capacity if all three visits target the same location. Powered by the RD840 engine using storable nitrogen tetroxide and UDMH propellants, the vehicle performs a series of ballistic hop-and-land trajectories between science targets. This concept dramatically extends the scientific return of a single lander mission by enabling surface sampling and instrument deployment at multiple geographically diverse locations without requiring a roving vehicle, making it particularly valuable for geological surveys, polar water ice prospecting, and future base site selection.
