Circumlunar Booster Tug (LBT)

The Circumlunar Booster Tug (LBT) is an in-space propulsion stage developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for capturing payloads arriving on translunar trajectories into stable lunar orbit. Powered by the RD861K engine burning nitrogen tetroxide and UDMH propellants, it delivers 21.3 tonnes of useful mass into lunar orbit from its own liftoff mass of 30.5 tonnes. The […]

About

The Circumlunar Booster Tug (LBT) is an in-space propulsion stage developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for capturing payloads arriving on translunar trajectories into stable lunar orbit. Powered by the RD861K engine burning nitrogen tetroxide and UDMH propellants, it delivers 21.3 tonnes of useful mass into lunar orbit from its own liftoff mass of 30.5 tonnes. The RD861K’s five-restart capability allows for lunar orbit insertion burn, circularization, and potential orbital plane corrections or on-orbit loiter. The LBT forms the second major propulsive stage in Yuzhnoye’s lunar exploration transportation stack, following the Lunar Booster Stage’s trans-lunar injection burn, and preceding the lunar lander descent stage. Together they form a fully Ukrainian-developed lunar transportation system.
