The Space Launch System (SLS) Airborne Basing is a concept developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for launching light-class integrated launch vehicles from carrier aircraft at altitude. The system is designed for maximum flexibility in orbital plane selection and launch azimuth, offering payload mass advantages and reduced cost per kilogram to orbit compared to fixed ground facilities with restricted launch azimuths. The carrier aircraft carrying the launch vehicle can reach the designated launch point within five hours of flight time. The complete airborne mission lasts up to 20 days from mobilization to vehicle release. Airborne basing eliminates site-specific infrastructure constraints and enables near-equatorial orbit launches from a range of geographic positions anywhere along the aircraft flight path.
