Viasat was founded in 1986 in Carlsbad, California, and has grown into one of the world's largest satellite communications companies, providing broadband connectivity, government/military secure communications, and in-flight WiFi services. In 2023, Viasat completed its acquisition of UK-based Inmarsat, creating a combined satellite communications company with global GEO, and (through Inmarsat's heritage) additional network assets.

Viasat's flagship ViaSat-3 constellation consists of ultra-high-capacity geostationary satellites, each designed to deliver more than 1 Terabit per second of network capacity — among the highest throughput satellites ever built. The constellation is designed to provide global broadband coverage across the Americas, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), and Asia-Pacific regions, serving residential broadband, maritime, aviation, and enterprise connectivity customers.

Beyond commercial broadband, Viasat provides secure satellite communications for defense and government customers, including tactical data links, encryption systems, and resilient military SATCOM terminals. The company's in-flight connectivity business equips commercial airline fleets with high-speed WiFi, and its maritime business serves commercial shipping, cruise lines, and government vessels requiring reliable at-sea connectivity.
