About Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM)

Founded in 1962 by academician Gong Zutong, the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM) is one of the largest research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Northwest China. Originally established around high-speed photography research, the institute grew into a comprehensive research organization spanning transient optics and photonics, space optics, interference spectral imaging, optoelectronic information technology, advanced optical instruments, and underwater optical technology. XIOPM operates 32 research units, including a State Key Laboratory of Transient Optics and Photonics, three CAS key laboratories, and several provincial engineering and technology centers, with a staff of over 900 including a CAS academician and numerous state-recognized researchers.

Space optics became a core discipline for the institute in the early 1990s with the establishment of its dedicated Space Optics Laboratory, which developed expertise in high-resolution visible-light imaging, hyperspectral imaging, and small-satellite CCD camera systems. XIOPM-built payloads have flown on major Chinese space missions: the CCD stereo camera and interference imaging spectrometer aboard the Chang'e-1 lunar probe (2007), the hyperspectral imager on China's first environmental monitoring satellite (2008), and the onboard and in-cabin camera optical systems for the Shenzhou-7 crewed spacecraft (2008). The institute continues to supply optical remote sensing, spectral imaging, and precision photonic instruments for Chinese Earth observation, meteorological, and scientific satellite programs.

In recent years XIOPM has also built a "hard technology" innovation and incubation ecosystem, spinning out commercial ventures in photonics manufacturing and satellite technology, including its commercial small-satellite subsidiary Zhongke Xingchen, which applies the institute's space optics heritage to miniaturized satellite payloads and commercial Earth observation constellations.
