Green Silicon is Maana Electric’s electrochemical process for producing metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) without the traditional carbothermal reduction step used in conventional silicon smelting, eliminating the direct CO2 emissions associated with that process and cutting overall emissions by roughly 80% versus conventional production. Unlike traditional methods that require high-purity quartz, Green Silicon can process low-grade feedstock such as desert sand and mining tailings, broadening the range of viable input materials. Production costs are reduced by using inexpensive raw materials and infrastructure adapted from aluminum smelting, and the pre-processing approach preserves feedstock integrity so leftover material can be returned to the environment responsibly. The technology has been spun out into a dedicated company, Kore Metals, which has secured backing from InnoEnergy to scale production across Europe for the energy, digital, and security sectors.
