Lithium-ion batteries are used extensively on spacecraft for energy storage, but thermal runaway — where a cell overheats, releasing gas and heat that triggers adjacent cells — is a serious safety concern. KULR’s TRS surrounds each cell with a precisely engineered carbon fiber composite structure that absorbs and redirects thermal energy from a runaway event, dissipating heat without propagating to neighboring cells. The TRS is qualified for space use including on NASA’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) program.

Beyond the TRS, KULR develops high-performance thermal interface materials (TIMs) — carbon fiber-based pads that efficiently transfer heat between battery cells and structural thermal management components. KULR also produces phase-change thermal energy storage materials for smoothing thermal loads in spacecraft.
