Lusospace’s MTQ140 magnetorquer is a passive magnetic system designed for attitude and control purposes in small-size satellites. Its functions include detumbling, stabilization, and unloading of reaction wheels. The magnetorquer generates a magnetic field that interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, providing a control torque for the spacecraft’s Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS). A key feature of the MTQ140 is its ‘Demisable by design’ characteristic. This addresses the challenge of re-entry survival for magnetorquer cores, which typically exceed 3.5 kg and can survive re-entry due to shielding. Lusospace developed this demisable solution to meet the identified needs for recurrent actuators. The MTQ140 is currently undergoing qualification for space applications, adhering to ECSS (ESA) standards, and has a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8. It is also free from non-EU export restrictions, specifically being ITAR and EAR free.
