The Magdrive Rogue is an advanced electric propulsion system designed for small satellites, specifically fitting within a 2U CubeSat form factor. It generates thrust an order of magnitude higher than other similarly sized electric propulsion systems. The full integrated system has a dry mass of 2.5 kg, which includes the propellant, an onboard processor, energy storage, and a plasma injector. The thruster employs a pulsed power system (PPS) to deliver a multi-kA, MW class electrical current pulse to the plasma injector, creating a high-energy plasma from a metal propellant. This metal propellant eliminates the need for heavy fuel tanks, cryogenics, or pressurization, and removes handling hazards. The system offers customizable performance, allowing for adjustable specific impulse and deep throttling, which is crucial for rendezvous, proximity operations, and precise maneuvering. An integrated microprocessor enables easy integration and command through the satellite’s master controls. Furthermore, the Rogue features directional thrust capabilities, allowing a single thruster to vector up to 10 degrees by altering its magnetic properties, suitable for both main propulsion and attitude control.
