About
PMD (Propellant Management Device) tanks are propellant storage and delivery vessels used on spacecraft propulsion systems to ensure gas-free liquid propellant (fuel and/or oxidizer, including NTO) is delivered to thrusters under microgravity and varying acceleration conditions. Northrop Grumman offers a broad catalogue of qualified PMD tank part numbers spanning a wide range of sizes, from small spherical/cylindrical tanks around 522 in³ (8.55 l) up to large tanks over 117,000 in³ (1,920 l), with operating pressures ranging from roughly 150 to 600 psig (10.3 to 41.4 bar) and dry weights from about 4 lbm (1.8 kg) to over 200 lbm (94 kg). Tanks are identified by Northrop Grumman/Orbital ATK part numbers (P/N) and are defined by Interface Control Documents (ICDs) specifying total volume, diameter/length envelope, weight, operating pressure, and propellant volume/capacity (given in lbm or in³/liters, with some listed as percentage fill fraction). Many part numbers are designated for fuel only, oxidizer only, or both, and are noted with letter codes (e.g., C, L, M, N, G) referencing qualified or protoflight environments. The tanks have extensive flight heritage across numerous spacecraft and launch programs, including INSAT, ARABSAT, SPACENET, EUROSTAR, MILSTAR, INMARSAT 2 and 3, GOES, S-5000, HS-601 and HS-601 HP, MARS OBSERVER, INTELSAT VIIA, N-STAR, S7000, IRIDIUM, NEAR, TEMPO/EXTENDED TEMPO, A2100 Ox and Fuel Families, LUNAR PROSPECTOR, SPS-95/SPS-200, ICM, BSAT, SBD/TOMS, STAR-2, ASTROLINK, ETS-8, MRO, NFIRE, GLAST, SBIRS, MESSENGER, Orbital Express, and Optus, among others. Some part numbers are associated with classified or unknown programs. Each tank is qualified to program-specific environments (qualified and/or protoflight) as noted in the specification table.
