About

The Redwire Coarse Sun Sensor (Cosine Type) is a compact, lightweight single-detector sun sensor offering an approximate cosine response with conical field-of-view symmetry. It is used for solar-array pointing, sun acquisition, and fail-safe attitude recovery in the same product family as Redwire’s Pyramid CSS.

Baffles can be added to restrict the field of view to a mission-specific stray-light requirement; Redwire designs the baffle to shield the detector while maximizing active FOV. The sensor needs no input power, and produces a peak output of 500-1300 microamps.

At just 10 grams nominal mass and 1.10 x 0.74 x 0.47 inches (2.8 x 1.9 x 1.2 cm) mounting-flange dimensions, this is Redwire’s smallest coarse sun sensor. It is radiation hardened to more than 100 krad (Si) and has flown on missions including GRAIL, Kepler, SDO, Mars Phoenix, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
