All space missions require hardware to survive the violent environment of launch and be properly positioned in space. Spacecraft structures serve this essential purpose, functioning as vehicles that support, deploy, protect, and correctly orient various equipment and instrumentation. They provide secure attachment points for major components like the spacecraft separation system, propulsion system, navigation components, and solar arrays. A well-designed structure must withstand all loads and forces the spacecraft will encounter while preventing these forces from affecting sensitive attached equipment. Key considerations include maximum allowable mass, expected loads/forces, reentry requirements, landing expectations, temperature extremes, size limitations, and connection to the launch vehicle. The primary structure includes the baseplate, radiator panels, and brackets for various components, all designed to manage loads and ensure structural integrity.
